COSATU Free State is Concerned About Electricity and Water Shortages in Qwaqwa
COSATU Free State has noted that yet again the community of Qwaqwa has been left in limbo with no water or electricity. The electricity vending points are closed or disabled and the residents are unable to buy electricity. The issue of electricity has been a challenge now in Qwaqwa for quite some time and the Municipality is failing to treat this matter with the urgency that it deserves.

We are troubled to note that water problems have also not been resolved and that residents in the steep and hilly areas are left with no water. This situation has already led to a number of service delivery protests lately; where communities in and around Bolata villages blocked roads with burning tyres and other forms of barricades.

We are concerned that Maluti A Phofung Municipality seems to have normalized an abnormal situation, whereby residents struggle to access basic necessities. We are starting to suspect that this is not accidental but its deliberate because there is no decisive action on the side of the Municipality to intervene on this matter.

As COSATU Free State, we refuse to accept this and we will keep on raising our voice and engaging in campaigns to highlight the plight of the workers and the poor ,who are mainly residents in that Municipality. We urge the ANC to intervene on this matter so that the residents can have the services they deserve. It is particularly worrying that this is happening on the back of Maluti A Phofung Municipality owing millions of rands to Eskom in unpaid bills.
