US President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel a program that prevents the deportation of certain illegal immigrants who entered the country as minors  is “outrageous” and " provocative” and “portrays the United States as a racist society crippled by its own xenophobic fears”,  an African-American journalist in Detroit says.

On Tuesday, Trump announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an Obama-era program that offers protection to young undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children.

"Trump's announcement was outrageous, provocative and does not take into account the history of the United States,  said Abayomi Azikiwe, editor at the Pan-African News Wire.

Azikiwe noted in a phone interview with Press TV on Wednesday that the indigenous Native Americans have been “those people commonly referred to as the Indians”, who were eradicated and replaced by European settlers and their African slaves.

“Those people [Native Americans] were largely eliminated through the genocidal policies of the European-American settlers,” he said.

Azikiwe said European-Americans settlers also exploited the Mexicans and gained control of large portions of their lands.

“Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California were sovereign Mexican territories” he said.

He said these youths, known by media as “Dreamers”, who were brought into the US as children and blended in with the community and integrated into the society and lack the social skills to live in their country of origin, are now facing detention and deportation.

Trump’s immigration policies have sparked protests both inside the US and abroad since he took office in January.

Trump has pledged to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and keep Latin American immigrants from illegally entering the country by building a wall on the border with Mexico.
